Old Tom could be the 'missing link'

Hayman Distillers has launched a gin it says is the missing link between genever, or Dutch-style sweet gin, and London dry gin.

Old Tom was developed by company chairman Christopher Hayman, whose great grandfather, James Burrough, originally created Beefeater Gin.

It is based on an 18th-century recipe and recreates the lightly sweetened style of gin that was particularly popular at th e time, according to a spokesman.

The distillery described 40 per cent abv Old Tom as "smooth, clean and refreshing, with juniper and soft spice aromas".

Marketing director James Hayman said: "Old Tom Gin is an old, but not forgotten, classic. It is described as the distinctive gentle cousin of London Dry."

He added that Old Tom is drier than Hayman's 1820 Gin Liqueur and comes in a longer, thinner 70cl bottle.
