In Brief

Test success for Colne ...

Police have praised drinks shops in Colne, Lancs, for a 100 per cent test purchase pass rate. An under-age girl was refused alcohol at all 12 outlets tested in the town, in a joint initiative between the police and Pendle Council's licensing department. Licensing enforcement officer Mick Armfield said: "It shows how committed they are to responsible retailing and resolving some of the problems that occur in the neighbourhoods where they work."

... but Skegness falls short

Five out of 11 shops in the Skegness area have been

caught selling alcohol to under-18s. The test purchase sting was carried out by police and Lincolnshire Trading Standards at half-term in Skegness, Winthorpe, Ingoldmells and Chapel St Leonards. Staff who made the sales were issued with fixed penalty fines.

Fake Glen's at large

Fake bottles of Glen's vodka have been seized by trading standards officers in 29 areas across England, Scotland and Wales, including Blackpool, Croydon, Sandwell, Fife and Cardiff. Higher than normal levels of methanol in the vodka are unlikely to be a health hazard, according to the Food Standards Agency.
