Edinburgh and Glasgow head growth in lockdown searches for alcohol deliveries
Google searches for drinks deliveries have increased by over 2,000% on an annual basis in Glasgow and Edinburgh during lockdown.
Figures compiled by the partyware supplier Event Supplies show the Scottish cities heading a list of major UK urban areas by some distance.
Sheffield was next on the list with an increase of 1,731% for searches including “beer delivery”, “cocktail delivery”, “alcohol delivery”, “booze delivery” and "wine delivery” during April compared with the same month in 2019.
Lockdown saw many drinks retailers and producers ramping up online operations in response to demand from people confined to their homes, including Majestic expanding its operation with Deliveroo to cover more than 80 locations.
Sheffield saw the biggest single annual increase for searches for a single drinks category, with the number of people Googling “wine delivery” up by 9,900%, said Event Supplies.
Nottingham and Cardiff were the cities with the most sluggish annual rise in all-round drinks delivery searches, but even they witnessed rises of 685% and 500% respectively.
Nielsen reported at the end of last month that online sales of alcohol for the four weeks to April 18 were 78% up on the same period in 2019.
