Majestic Wine's 2020 range review: Spotlight on Loire's organic producers

Majestic Wine has reported early signs that its new 2020 wine ranges have been a hit, despite its customers being in lockdown, and it says each of the revamped categories is recording year-on-year growth.

Over the coming week DRN will look at each of the five key revamped categories in more detail, starting today with Majestic's spotlight on organic and biodynamic producers in its enhanced range of Loire wines.

The region, which is famed for classical interpretations of Sauvignon Blanc, is now becoming "a go-to for so much more", according to Majestic’s Loire wines buyer, Nadia Williamson.

She says: “One of my key focuses going into our Loire range review was to really expand the number of regions and styles on offer. Historically, we have been very focused on the big names, but there is so much more to discover.”

Among the new regions highlighted in Majestic’s range review are Touraine, Vouvray and Muscadet, which have all been given greater prominence on store shelves.

Many of the new additions also tap into the consumer appetite for organic wines, which is an area Majestic is seeing more and more demand for in general.

Williamson says: We have added a number of really exciting new producers; from young talent with Denis Meunier in Vouvray, as well as established family companies such as Delaunay’s in Touraine. An area I am personally really excited about, which the Loire is excelling at, is the number of organic and biodynamic producers making waves. We have started working with two experts in this area: Domaine Douassier and Alphonse Mellot as well as a number of others.”

Another key area of focus for the range review was dramatically increasing the number of Loire reds available to Majestic customers.

In keeping with trends seen in the on-trade, Majestic has doubled its range of Pinot Noirs, Gamays and Cabernet Francs from Sancerre, Chinon, Touraine and Saumur.

Majestic says it also hopes that the addition of a new Definition Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé will give its customers a useful starting point to further explore the wines of the Loire. Both wines will also be vegan.

Williamson adds: “Combining changing customer demands for new regions or organic/vegan wines, alongside some of the most classic wine styles available, is a real core strength of this region of France.

“I am really delighted with the balance we’ll be seeing in Majestic stores between progress and heritage – and I hope both our staff and customers will be as excited by the developments across the Loire Valley as I am”.

New additions include Luly LAlouette Cabernet France 2018, Chinon (rsp: £10.99 Mix Six or £12.99 per bottle); Thierry Delaunay Manoir Touraine Sauvignon Blanc (rsp: £8.99 Mix Six or £9.99 per bottle); Domaine des Patureaux Poilly Fume 2019 (£13.99 Mix Six or £15.99 per bottle); and Sancerre ‘Sur le Fort; 2018, Domaine Fouassier (rsp: 19.99 Mix Six or £24.99 per bottle).
