Bodega Bay aims to kickstart UK's Hard Seltzer sector

The Hard Seltzer trend in the US is showing signs of spilling over into the UK with the launch of a premium brand called Bodega Bay.

The brand taps into the demand for a refreshing drink that hits both the low-sugar and low-calorie mark.

The two expressions are Apple with Ginger & Acai Berry and Elderflower with Lemon & Mint. The drinks are each made from three ingredients: Brew Clear Alcohol, sparkling spring water and fruit extracts. Both are 4% abv and contain just 72 calories per 25cl can.

The Bodega Bay brand is the brainchild of entrepreneur Charlie Markland. He said: “Hard Seltzer is the next generation of alcoholic drink and in bringing it to the UK we are filling a huge gap in the market. The UK is currently primed for the category to launch as consumers increasingly turn to low-sugar and low-calorie alternatives – a trend that has exploded in the US and has seen the Hard Seltzer value sales grow to $500 million.”

The newcomer (rsp: £2.95 per can) will be available to the on and off-trades and the producer has already secured a listing with three Boma London bar and restaurants as well as Goldfinch cocktail bar in South West London. It is also available via the Bodega Bay website. The brand will also be activating its own bar area at a number of festivals this summer.
