English wine centre to be built
A multi-million-pound centre for English wine and spirits is being planned in Sussex.
Nick Mosley, marketing and events director at Sharp Media and the brains behind the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Fesitval and the Kingston and Fitzrovia food festivals in London, is working on plans for the South Downs Wine & Spirit Centre with Lewes District Council.
A £6 million hub for the industries would include a tasting room, shop, bar, museum, conference centre, hotel rooms and a rooftop terrace with live vines, the Brighton Argus has reported.
The building has been designed by Brighton-based Yelo Architects and organisers are now seeking financial backers and lottery funding.
Sussex is home to some of England’s best known wineries including Ridgeview, Nyetimber and Rathfinny Estate, as well as spirits producers such as Blackdown Artisan Spirits and Brighton Gin.
Speaking at the project’s launch, English Wine Producers marketing director Julia Trustram Eve said: “There are so many more wine producers than people realise int he UK and so many are from Sussex. This really is a fantastic new concept.”
