Sainsbury's scoops top prize in cider challenge
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference French Sparkling Cider has won the International Cider Challenge 2012.
The cider, made by Les Celliers Associés in Britanny’s Val de Rance, beat nearly 100 other entrants to scoop the only gold medal awarded in a tough competition.
Sainsbury’s also took a silver medal for its English Vintage Cider made by Westons. The Herefordshire cider producer was also awarded silver for its own Wyld Wood Organic Classic brand.
Other silvers were won by Aspall, Cidre Bigoud, Country Cider Co, Les Celliers Associés, Magners GB, Sheppy’s and Union Libre.
National Association of Cider Makers spokesman Simon Russell chaired a panel of expert judges, including retailers, suppliers and journalists.
He said: “We were again reminded of the breadth of different styles available. This year we had more entries from smaller and artisanal producers and if we can encourage even more in future years that would be great.
“The general standard was really good and the award-winners are well merited.”
Aspall’s 2010 Vintage Imperial won a design and packaging gold.
