Call for cohesive push for Welsh drinks
A dedicated strategy is needed to exploit the potential of the wine, beer and cider industries in Wales, according to a report from a committee of the country’s National Assembly.
The rural development sub-committee finding says the sectors are hampered by a lack of government expertise in the drinks industry and the absence of a co-ordinated promotional strategy.
The report cites the New Zealand wine industry as an example of what can be achieved by a country with a similar climate to Wales.
Committee chair Rhodri Glyn Thomas said: “We have only to look to the example of whisky in Scotland and Guinness and Baileys in Ireland to see the economic impact a well-marketed drinks industry with a strong national identity can have.
“The wine, beer and cider industries have the potential to make a similar contribution in Wales, with the right support and marketing.”
