Lightweight bottles for Californian wines
The Co-operative is introducing lightweight glass bottles for its own-label Californian wines in a move which will save an estimated 530 tonnes of glass each year.
The switch from 460g to 345g bottles will also cut carbon dioxide emissions by 450 tonnes a year, the retailer said.
The Californian range includes Pink Chill rosé, the Co-op’s best-selling own-brand wine, as well as Fab Cab and Big Chill.
The Co-operative has already introduced lightweight bottles for 60 of its own wines.
Co-operative Food environment manager Iain Ferguson said: “We’re really pleased to be lightweighting these bottles, which is another step forward in our glass lightweighting agenda.
“The environment – and taking action on packaging – is a major concern for our customers.”
