The British Institute of Innkeeping will welcom e candidates taking the BIIAB NCPLH as provisional members from March 5. Candidates will automatically qualify for a free six-month provisional membership and will receive regular updates from the BII. A spokeswoman said: "We realise many people who have taken the NCPLH do not go straight into their new roles and if they do they are bombarded with information. This provisional membership will offer them the level of support they need in the early stages and when they are ready they can apply to become full BII members."
Medical chief joins sport row
The president of the Royal College of Physicians is pressing the government to ban alcohol advertising and sports sponsorship as a way to stop the growing number of alcohol-related deaths. Ian Gilmore said action was needed to protect children, who were influenced by sporting heroes wearing shirts with drink company logos. The Portman Group said "strict rules" were already in place to prevent irresponsible marketing , but it was looking into banning alcohol-branded replica kits in childrens' sizes and drinks known as slammers or shooters.
Change at United Brands
United Brands - which represents La Mare Jersey Cream Liqueur, ABK6 Cognac and Brazilian bottled lager Nova Schin - is under new management. Mark Dawkins and Rob Preston have taken over strategic development of the business after investing in the company. They will run the company from offices in Romsey, Hampshire.
First meeting date set
The Drinkaware Trust's new board is due to hold its first meeting on March 12 to discuss the charity's direction and strategic priorities. The charity's first board, which was appointed on Feb 7, consists of 10 trustees who are chaired by former MP Debra Shipley. A trust spokeswoman said plans to appoint two lay trustees had been put on hold for the moment.
Marston's has launched a special edition of Marston's Pedigree in honour of the Cricket World Cup. The 6 per cent abv brew will come in a "cricketing whites" bottle, which goes on sale in Sainsbury's this month and in Tesco, Asda and Morrisons later in the year.
