Police to monitor licensed premises during World Cup

Police are being reminded to keep an eye on the off-trade during the World Cup, in addition to monitoring licensed premises screening matches.

The Home Office has issued guidance encouraging “random and targeted visits”, with an emphasis on problem premises.

A Home Office spokesman said the guidance was primarily aimed at pubs with big screens, but it was possible off-trade premises would face extra scrutiny to make sure they were not breaching their licences or doing anything to encourage excessive or illegal drinking.

“It’s a time when people are going to be drinking a lot, and we want to make sure off-licences are complying with licensing law,” he said. “It’s not the Home Office cracking down on off-licences.”?He added: “We want everyone to enjoy the World Cup in the right spirit.”
