£69 million extra in beer and cider sales for June's final week
Beer and cider contributed to half of all off-trade growth in the last week of June, equating to more than £69 million.
The Nielsen data, for the week ending June 27, 2020, saw a big spike in off-trade sales, most likely as a result of the heatwave conditions.
Gemma Cooper, senior commercial business partner at Nielsen, said: "The UK experienced a heat wave for the most part of the week to Saturday June 27. We normally see a spike in off trade sales when the weather gets warmer and this heatwave was no different; total off-trade growth was up by £139million (+31%).
“Beer and Cider continue to be stand out performers, this week contributing to half of all off-trade growth!
“Brits spent an extra £31million on spirits in the off-trade this week, with all spirits choices experiencing growth.
“Gin still remains the top spirit tipple yet Vodka and Rum still have a place with shoppers at home choices.
“Next week's data will be the last week in which the on-trade is still closed, are we going to see a spike in sales as shoppers stock up or will we see a plateau as shoppers eagerly await the opportunity to drink in the on trade?"
