Penderyn reveals location of second distillery
Penderyn has revealed the location of its second distillery and visitor centre with the promise of a third distillery in the near future.
The whisky producer's second site will be in the Old Board School, latterly a council office, in Llandudno and it will open in 2021.
The announcement follows an offer of funding support from the Welsh Government. The proposed development will be the Welsh Whisky Company’s first expansion from its site in Penderyn, in the Brecon Beacons, and subject to planning permission, the £5 million project will see the new development opening in Llandudno by 2021.
A third distillery for Penderyn is planned for Swansea, and is set to open in 2022/23.
Stephen Davies, chief executive of Penderyn Distillery, said: “The confirmation of Welsh Government support is a major step towards achieving our plans for a brand new distillery and visitor centre in Llandudno. We believe the distillery will allow us to introduce unique and innovative single malt whiskies, distilled in North Wales, as well as providing an attraction that will complement the already vibrant and diverse tourism scene in north Wales, and contribute towards extending the visitor season further.
"With our funding package now in place, we will be developing our proposals further over the coming months and engaging with stakeholders and the local community as we prepare our planning application.”
The development has been offered £1.4 million from the Tourism Investment Support Scheme and Food Business Investment Scheme.
