Winter is coming for Johnnie Walker
Winter is coming and Johnnie Walker has launched a limited edition whisky to cash in on the enduring popularity of hit show Game of Thrones.
White Walker by Johnnie Walker pays homage to the legions of undead wights that are gearing up to plague Westeros in the show.
It is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, in which the white walkers terrorise the human race and wreak havoc with their supernatural powers.
The Night’s Watch has tried to repel them, but they are on the brink of invading the continent ahead of the final series of the show.
The bottling of White Walker aims to bring fans right to the frozen north of Westeros with a white and blue design. Johnnie Walker’s iconic striding man has been fashioned in armour in order to march among the forces led by the Knight King, the leader of the white walkers.
The whisky is designed to be drunk straight from the freezer, “echoing the chilling presence of the white walkers”.
Blender George Harper went to Clynelish distillery in the Highlands, one of Scotland’s northernmost distilleries, to gain inspiration for the limited-edition Scotch.
“Whiskies from Clynelish have endured long, Scottish winters, not dissimilar to the long periods endured by the Night’s Watch who have ventured north of the wall, so it was the perfect place to start when creating this unique whisky,” he said.
The result is a 41.7% abv blended Scotch that retails at £32 for a 75cl bottle. The whisky has notes of caramelised sugar and vanilla, fresh red berries with a touch of orchard fruit and features single malts from Clynelish and Cardhu.
Jeff Peters, vice president, licensing and retail at HBO, which screens the show, said: “We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whisky and once we saw the vision from Johnnie Walker for a way to collaborate we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now.
“From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with White Walker by Johnnie Walker. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping this delicious whisky as they wait for season eight and beyond.”
