Spanish chef extends into wine for UK market

Spanish chef Jose Pizarro has launched two own-brand wines, Jose Pizarro Chardonnay and Jose Pizarro Shiraz Cuvve from the Andalusian region in Spain.

Jose Pizarro Chardonnay 2017 is a 100% Chardonnay with tasting notes of white flower aromas, citrus fruits, peach and aromatic herbs.

The single vineyard Syrah Cuvve 2016 is a blend of 75% Syrah, 20% Tinto de Rota and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, which produces a “complex nose” with aromas of blackberries, cacao, leather, spices and vanilla. It is fermented in French Allier oak vats, before being aged for six months in two-year-old French Allier oak barriques with two rackings before being bottled.

Both wines are produced at the Huerta de Albala winery in Arcos de la Frontera, Andalusia Spain, whose Taberner label has been awarded in excess of 90 points by Robert Parker.

Pizarro said he wanted to bring his love for Spanish wine to the UK, and Huerta de Albala is one of his favourite wine producers.

He added: “Together with the team at Huerta de Albala we have created two wines that I am very proud of. I am passionate about promoting Spanish wines, cava and sherries in my restaurants and hopefully in the near future it will be easily accessible in grocery stores and wine merchants throughout London.”

The wine launch comes a month after Pizarro launched his own brand of 100% extra virgin olive oil produced from the rare Morisca variety.

The Jose Pizarro Chardonnay retails for £16 and the Syrah Cuvee for £18.
