Brookfield aims to fizz up UK cider market with Finnish brand

The team that rejuvenated Kestrel lager and Diamond cider is now targeting UK retailers with a Finnish cider called Fizz.

The brand was launched in 1994 and has become the leading brand in the Baltic states and is also distributed in Belarus and Denmark, among others.

Brookfield Drinks, which was set up in 2012 by former Charles Wells managing director Nigel McNally, has now signed a UK distribution deal with brand owner Olvi.

He pointed out that Finns have similar tastes in beverages to Brits, and believes that it can emulate its success in its homeland, where it is the number two cider brand.

McNally said: “Fizz Nordic cider is a leading European cider brand and is an exciting new addition to our cider portfolio. With its unique protective foil top we believe that Fizz cider will become an important player in the UK premium cider market.”

This protective foil top is designed to allow consumers to enjoy Fizz ciders “on the go, when glassware is not easily accessible, such as at outdoor social gatherings, picnics or festivals”.

The initial launch will see two variants introduced – apple and pear – with fruit flavours promised in the coming months.

The 50cl cans have an rrp of £1.09 and Brookfield is targeting multiple grocers, wholesalers and the convenience sector.

Fizz will sit alongside Kestrel, Diamond, Star cider, the Hanging Houses of Cuenca organic wine and Portuguese lager Super Bock in the Brookfield portfolio.
