Sparkling wine the third fastest growing category in supermarkets

Sparkling wine was the third fastest growing grocery category in supermarkets in 2016 according to new Nielsen figures.

Fizz added an extra £101.9 million in sales over the year, a figure beaten only by fresh fruit and “free-from” foods.

Sales of sparkling wine grew by 15.5% driven by the popularity of Prosecco.

Three other drinks categories featured in the top 10 measured by cash growth. Spirits added £51.8 million in sales (+1.3%) to take seventh place. Lager was eighth with sales up by £41.6 million (+1.4%). Stout and ale was in ninth place, up 5.1% and £32.6 million.

Bottled water, chilled ready meals, cosmetics and e-cigarettes made up the rest of the top 10.
