Minimum pricing announcement expected today

The government is expected to formally announce today that it has abandoned plans for minimum unit pricing and a ban on multibuys for alcohol in England and Wales.

Home Office minister Jeremy Browne will make a statement on the government's alcohol strategy at around 1.15pm.

Speculation has been rife since press reports last week suggested that the government would revert to its previous preferred policy of a ban on sales below cost.

Expectation of a U-turn has already led to the Faculty of Public Health – which sets standards for public health professionals in the UK – quitting the government responsibility deal in protest.
