Supermarkets slash prices
The festive pricing war has kicked off with supermarkets slashing prices on leading spirit
brands. A 70cl bottle of Smirnoff Red
is on sale in Tesco for £8 -
a saving of £4.19 . Sainsbury's is selling 1-litre bottles of Bell's
for £11.73 - a £6 saving. It has also knocked £9 off its own-label Taste the Difference Irish Cream Liqueur. Asda is running a two-for-£20 promotion on 70cl bottles of Baileys, saving shoppers £5.36.
Beadles on Licensing Act
The cost of getting a drinks licence has gone up by 1,000% for some WSTA members since the Licensing Act 2003 came into force, the body has said. Chief executive Jeremy Beadles gave evidence on how the Licensing Act is working at Westminster this week. He said the act is working on the whole, but that massively increased costs and "over-zealous" local authorities were the main problems with it.
