Chancellor: alcohol tax to rise 8%
Alcohol tax is to be hiked by a massive 8% from next Monday (Dec 1), Chancellor Alistair Darling has revealed in his pre-Budget report.
Tobacco and petrol taxes will also rise to offset a 2.5% VAT cut, he has announced.
As of next Monday, VAT will be cut from 17.5% to 15% until the end of next year.
The WSTA said drinkers will be paying the price for bailing out the economy .
Chief executive Jeremy Beadles said: “The Chancellor has given consumers no cause to celebrate this Christmas.
“This year he will have increased tax on alcohol by a massive 17%, hurting consumers when they have little else to cheer about. It’s the wrong tax rise at the wrong time.”
